An unnamed 10-year-old girl living in the south of Senegal was raped by a neighbor and is currently five months pregnant with twins. Fatou Kine Camara, president of the Senegalese Women’s Bar Association, lobbied the authorities for an abortion for the 10-year-old girl because she was too young, but failed. The 10-year-old girl will be forced to keep the pregnancy and become one of the youngest mothers in the world. Before that, another girl in Senegal was also raped and gave birth when she was 9 years old.
Senegal – a country located in western Africa, is home to the most draconian abortion laws. Abortion here is illegal, women who have abortions will be sentenced to 10 years in prison. According to statistics, in this African country, in the first 6 months of 2012 there were 40 women arrested for abortion. Doctors who helped them with abortions were stripped of their licenses. Every year, hundreds of Senegalese women die from failed abortions.
