As twins, but while the older sister was born normally, the younger sister was born in an intact amniotic sac, surprising doctors and nurses.
Local media reported that on November 22, 2022, Beatriz Azevedo and her husband Marcos Sena, both 25 years old, welcomed their first twins, 2 daughters. However, this is not an ordinary twin but also very magical and interesting.
Accordingly, Ms. Beatriz gave birth to her first two daughters by caesarean section at Anna Turan Hospital for Mothers and Children located in Barcarena city, in the state of Pará, northern Brazil. The doctors took turns removing the two babies from the womb.
Baby Eloise was born safe and healthy for the first time. About 2 minutes later, the doctors continued to bring out the twin sister Julia. However, at that time, all the doctors and nurses in the delivery room were surprised to see that baby Julia was still lying peacefully in the amniotic sac completely intact.
The phenomenon of being born in an intact amniotic sac, also known as “cow birth”, is very rare, about 80,000 new births have one birth, moreover this is a twin. This amniotic sac is the living environment of the fetus in the womb. Usually, the amniotic sac breaks before the baby is born. But in some rare cases like the one above, the baby can be born in the amniotic sac intact. This amniotic sac can rupture on its own, or the baby can break on its own or the doctor must intervene to break it to get the baby out.
Obstetrician Geovany Magalhaes of the Children’s and Maternity Hospital told local media: ‘Parents of twins had the opportunity to see their baby still in the amniotic sac, acting as if the baby was in the mother’s womb environment.
After doctors removed baby girl Julia from the amniotic sac, she was given first aid and was quickly reunited with her mother and twin sister. Fortunately, both baby and mother Beatriz are healthy and safe.
Recalling the moment her daughter was born in the amniotic sac, Ms. Beatriz shared: “All the doctors were shocked and amazed. They told each other to take that picture before the amniotic sac burst.”
As of November 26, Beatriz and her mother are still in the hospital to monitor their health. Beatriz’s twin daughters were born prematurely at just 36 weeks of pregnancy, so they had to stay in the hospital until they gained enough weight before being discharged home.
The baby in this case was born fully intact in the amniotic membrane, creating a surreal and beautiful moment that left doctors and parents alike marveling at the miracle of life. The baby was quickly and safely removed from the membrane, and both mother and child were found to be healthy and well.
