A baby born in Hong Kong with 31 fingers and toes breaks a world record and is celebrated
In a world where breaking records is a coveted achievement, a baby born in Hong Kong has made headlines by setting a new record of their own. The baby, born with a total of 31 fingers and toes, has broken the previous record of 25 digits held by two individuals.
The baby, who has not been named yet, was born to a couple in a hospital in Hong Kong. The parents were shocked when they saw the baby’s 15 fingers and 16 toes, which were caused by a genetic condition known as polydactyly.
Polydactyly is a rare genetic condition that affects approximately one in every 700-1000 births. However, having as many as 11 extra fingers, like Honghong, is exceedingly rare.
Honghong’s mother also has polydactyly in both her hands and feet. Concerned about passing on the condition to her child, she underwent multiple check-ups and ultrasounds during her pregnancy at hospitals in Shenzhen, Guangdong province.
Even when she was nearly 5 months pregnant, she visited Phudiyan Maternity Hospital for a 4D ultrasound, but the doctors assured her that the baby did not have any deformities.
Strange baby: 31 fingers and toes in Hong KongWhen Honghong was born, the couple was shocked to find that his condition was even more severe than his mother’s. Each of Honghong’s feet has 8 toes, while his hands have 8 and 7 fingers, respectively.
Liu Hong, a professor in the Department of Pediatric Orthopedics at Hubei Provincial People’s Hospital, informed Honghong’s father, Zou Chenglin, that the surgical procedure would be challenging. Honghong is currently too young to undergo anesthesia, but he will need to undergo surgery between 6 months and 1 year of age before the bones fuse.
After the news of the baby’s birth broke, it quickly gained attention worldwide, with people amazed and curious about the baby’s condition. Many people took to social media to express their excitement and awe at the baby’s unique feature, with some calling it a miracle and others calling it a blessing.
The birth of this baby with 31 fingers and toes has not only broken a world record but also brought attention to the importance of celebrating uniqueness and embracing differences. It has shown that every individual, regardless of their physical appearance, has something special to offer to the world. As the baby grows and develops, we can only hope that they continue to be celebrated and loved for who they are.
